Illustration Design, Craft, and other visual shenanigans

We’ll call this section my Fun Corner.

I wanted to showcase various other skills that I can utilize when solving a design problem. I have the ability to create with minimal computer usage; and if a client requires a hand-drawn design or other form of craft for their branding, I can do it.

Mixed Media

These 9x9 woodblock prints were created as an homage to Los Angeles, and were showcased at the 7th Annual Mentors Art Exhibition in Pomona, CA.

Creating these woodblock prints was such an elaborate process - photography, various print processes, digital illustration, and some good ol’ extensive research. The knowledge gained was immense, and further developed my creative side.

I also walked through skid row as part of the design process. Now THAT’S dedication.

CD Package Design

While I believe no one will be requesting jewel CD case designs anytime soon, it’s still a fun platform to explore. This design is based on a fictitious band, The Hunger, and the illustrated story retells the classic events of love found and eventually lost.

Postage Stamps

If the USPS were to ask to me to design a series of stamps, these would be it - based on my love for Japan and its rich and unpredictable culture.

Relish Motion Sequence

This 1-minute opening movie sequence is based on my of my favorite graphic novels (based on food, of course), Relish by Lucy Knisley. These are motion stills for now; the actual video will be posted soon.

Accordion Fold Book (Book Arts)

I have traveled to the Philippines annually for nearly a decade now, so I’ve been exposed to the extreme living conditions between a first-world and third-world country. I showcased these differences in an accordion book, with emphasis on the daily lives of children.

Instructional Handout

I’ll leave this here in case you don’t know how to properly use a 2-hole puncher.

This…is probably my favorite piece ever.

Lasercut Restaurant Menu

Using a laser cut technique and textured paper, a recreation of traditional Japan screen doors was created for the menu of this Japanese restaurant.

The processes leading up to the my final visual output was actually a daunting process. Working with a print company specializing in CNC and laser cut processes, I had to learn various print methods, followed by paper research (and yes, the world of paper itself is a a daunting beast in itself). Finally, I engaged in the art of craft - so much trial & error in getting the right materials, measurements, and execution.

I only gave myself one X-acto knife cut on the finger during this creative process!

Original Children’s Storybook (Typography Study)

This project was meant to experiment and identify type as shapes and forms rather than letters. As a result, all imagery consists of letterforms, symbols, and abbreviations. Pardon the print marks and format, as these images served as the print version - and it eventually was printed, in spiral book format.

Synopsis: my original story detailing the importance of patience, a trait I often lack. The book was ultimately dedicated to myself.
